Appliqué Cricut Maker Shirt Project

Appliqué meets Cricut. According to google appliqué is defined as ornamental needlework in which pieces of fabric are sewn or stuck onto a large piece of fabric to form pictures or patterns. Appliqué is simply using a piece of fabric and using it on another piece to decorate it. It’s traditionally sewn/ embroidered onto fabric by hand or by machine. I love how Appliqué looks and if you are like me and saw all those cute birthday shirts with appliqué. I miss doing fabric craft projects. I own a brother’s se400 and I’ve been eyeing the Brothers 800 but I wouldn’t allow myself to spend $599 on a craft I’ve yet to master. I find this technique to be easier than using my machine. ( I can hear my embroidery ladies cursing me out but I’m not giving up, I’m still learning) I will be showing two ways how to appliqué with your Cricut Maker. Just iron on with the heat and bond. And making a shirt. I would suggest you sew it on with the heat and bond. Because it will come apart if you don’t. Short cut to the SVG

This is a super unique way to stand apart from the boring Vinyl/ HTV and give the luxe feel to your design. Whether you are selling products or a crafter. Applying the appliqué to your technique will be a win-win. I will be showing you two ways to on how to do this technique. One is just iron on and the second is sewing. Because I had to learn the hard way and the gifts I made for all my family kiddos came apart in the wash. I just thank god I wasn’t selling them. OK, So let’s get started!!!!! The first thing we need to plan our design. I wanted to do a two-layer pumpkin and in foil, I wanted to say something cute like Mommy’s Little Pumpkin

Materials Needed

A yard of fabric, I got from Hobby Lobby a year ago. If I find it I will link it to the post.

HTV of choice: I’m using Cricut’s brand Purple Glitter HTV (Heat transfer vinyl).

Cricut cutting machine. I’m using my Cricut maker. Boy, do I love my machine. I have my review here if you need a bit more convincing.

Heat and bond. The one in the red package. I love this stuff, It’s perfect for any sewing/embroidery project

The Scoring Wheel from the Cricut Brand

Heat press machine. I personally love mines but I came along way from using my rusty iron. Click here if you are interested in knowing if a heat press is even worth it.

Step One:

Open design space and always save your projects. I’m not sure if design space only Yells fuck you before crashing itself into a ball of flames and taking my work with it. But it’s safe to say “ Just save it.

Step Two:

Open your SVG. Click Here If you need mines. I create most of my SVGs in Inkscape and click here for it., we will ungroup it and make a duplicate of the pumpkin in the inside. The reason for the duplicate: one will be for the fabric appliqué and the second one will be for the heat and bond. ( if you want to see this project without a fabric appliqué…click. Step Three In Design Space type out the phrase “Mommy Little Pumpkin”. For the phrase ” Mommy Little Pumpkin” I will be using this cute font I found on Dafont.com called “Beauty Dream“. (Click here to download it for free.) Next, we have to type your kid’s name inside the pumpkin. I used Yessy from Dafont to type Yara’s Name. (Click here to download it for free.) Look at this video, I will show you how to download fonts from dafont.com.

Step Four

Press the green “Make It ” button. Make sure you click Mirror on your cut.

Pro-Tip: HTV is always mirrored.

When the settings appear I choose Fabric to cut my cotton fabric and heat bond. With this cut, you will need a scoring wheel. (If you need help on the different Cricut Tools and what exactly does it do then….click here) Make sure you mirror your project.

Cut your heat and bond and fabric on the same mat. And now peel it off and iron together. Now take your shirt and place it down. And iron it directly to the shirt. Easy right, but this is very important. Please sew around the design. It doesn’t make any sense to create this cute design just so it tears up in the wash. After sewing move on to the next step.

Step Five

Pro-Tip: HTV is always mirrored.

After cutting your Fabric then we will load our HTV. The setting used was Glitter HTV and I used the standard blade that came with the Cricut Maker. Again, make sure you mirror your project.
